You knew it was only a matter of time before this happened. Screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasay have optioned the rights to Boston Strong, an upcoming book by true crime author Casey Sherman and Boston Herald reporter Dave Wedge that covers the Boston Marathon bombings that took place on April 15th of this year, the city of Boston’s reaction to the tragedy, and the manhunt to find the brothers who were responsible for it.
The book isn’t due out until sometime next year, but as we’ve seen happening more and more often lately, Hollywood isn’t fond of waiting around decades to make movies about significant news stories anymore.
Johnson and Tamasay have previously worked on the screenplay for Oscar-winning drama The Fighter together, which is Johnson’s only feature writing credit to date. Tamasay has many writing credits, though not at all the type of credits you’d expect to see associated with one of the writers of The Fighter. Most of his other works consist of Air Bud and a bunch of its sequels, as well as spin-offs Air Buddies, Snow Buddies, Space Buddies, and various other Buddies movies.
The writing duo along with producer Dorothy Aufiero have scored the rights to one of Sherman’s books in the past, previously optioning his 2009 title The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue. The book tells the story of a Coast Guard rescue mission in 1952, and was picked up by Disney. That deal likely opened up the door for their acquisition of the rights to Boston Strong.
What do you think about a movie being made about the Boston Marathon bombings?
