Sylvester Stallone commonly takes to his Twitter feed to keep fans informed with up-to-the-minute news regarding his latest projects. Lately he’s been blowing up the feed with rumors about who will or won’t be directing/starring in/operating the boom mike on The Expendables 3, which is set for release late next summer.
Today Stallone dropped a mighty big bomb – bigger than Rhinestone even – about the latest old-school action hero to join him, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and whoever else has yet to join the cast. News flash: he’s bigger than the entire cast combined…Harrison Ford. And even more interesting is this is apparently not a casting addition, but a replacement of Bruce Willis.
Now mind you, a Tweet is by no means a solid confirmation of Ford’s casting. But the Expendables franchise has always been Stallone’s baby and he would be in a better position to know than anyone else. Plus he’s not hinting at the possible involvement of Ford as he’s done in the past with Mel Gibson. It really does like Ford will be stepping in to play whatever role Bruce Willis’ character Church would have in the latest sequel.
A few minutes after the first Tweet Stallone followed up with this cryptic pronouncement which may or may not pertain to the previous Tweet:
For now Harrison Ford’s involvement with the newest Expendables adventure remains up in the air until we get a solid confirmation. Ford has been spinning his wheels in recent years regarding acting choices; it seems like he would rather take the easy paycheck and gruff and mumble his way through whatever role he played. Joining the cast of The Expendables 3 isn’t the radical redirection his career is in dire need of, but if it happens it will still be fun to watch. I just don’t want to see a ton of Indiana Jones and Han Solo jokes being cracked whenever his character is on screen.
The Expendables 3 opens on August 15, 2014.
