Kickstarter Spotlight: Denver

If you are like me and you see Jimmy Palmiotti‘s name, you probably get excited and start thinking of all the great comics he’s written over the years. Because, let’s be honest, the dude kicks major ass at everything he does. So when I saw that his newest Kickstarter campaign Denver was up and running, I almost immediately jumped at the chance to write it up. This is an exclusive to Kickstarter project, meaning it will only be available to backers of this campaign. And with a story like this one, it’s surely going to be one of the year’s best graphic novels. It’s all about mankind after a disaster, but it’s not your typical post-apocalyptic story…it’s far more than that.

The premise of this graphic novel is that a meteor has struck the Earth and has caused a shift in water levels. Well, actually, the vast majority of land sank beneath the seas and what little land is left is fiercely defended. That’s where our buddy Max Flynn comes in. He’s part of the group that monitors and protects the city (city state) of Denver from anything and anyone going in or out. With a finite amount of land mass, it stands to reason that only a certain quantity of people can be sustained. Armed with that knowledge, Max and the rest of the Coast Border Guards are tasked with controlling the flux of wanderers and marauders who seek entrance. This story is all about Max and how he is forced to reassess his worldview and the realization that not everything is as he thought. Sounds intriguing, yes? I would be remiss if I didn’t also say that this is a mature graphic novel and most likely not suitable for children.

Continue below for more information and to check out a Kickstarter video to see what the book is all about.

I must say that the team that is bringing Denver to life is spectacular. Justin Gray is on the writing team with Jimmy, but this is nothing new. They have worked on a multitude of projects together over the years. Amanda Conner is on board, as well. I love her artwork, especially the Harley Quinn pieces! Add into the mix artist Pier Brito and letterer Bill Tortolini and you get a group of dedicated folks that are going to give you more than you bargained for! But I think what intrigued me most about the project was that they are putting together a soundtrack for it. Hans Karl is helping bring the comic to life with music based on the book itself! Included with this is the ending credit song “You Do” from Carrie Johnson. The music adds an extra sensory level that you don’t find often in comics.

As with all Kickstarters, there are rewards for donating your hard-earned money. For as little as five bucks you can get a digital copy of the graphic novel. Want the script, too? Make it eight dollars and you get it, too! But things truly get interesting when you get above twenty-five, like getting your name in the book and receiving a signed physical copy. I personally went with the forty dollar reward that gave me everything I’ve already mentioned and a couple of signed prints! What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good deal. If you’ve got a bit more to spend, there are several more rewards that offer a lot more extras, including copies of previous Kickstarters and copies of all the prints available.

No matter how you slice it, this is a really great way to snag some great stuff while helping this project come to life. please check out the Denver Kickstarter page here. You won’t want to miss out on this, folks. It’s almost fully funded with over three weeks to go so you know you’re going to get the rewards when it’s all said and done. And while this fundraiser doesn’t end until March 12, don’t delay…the reward you want might be a limited one!
