After waiting years for Ghostbusters 3 to happen, news broke today that we will be finally getting it. Just not the one you’d might expect to see. Bill Murray had expressed interest in seeing the franchise go through a reboot with an all female cast, and that of course sparked talks amongst fans. Though we do not know who will be casting, Paul Feig confirmed that he will be directing the film, and that The Heat writer Katie Dippold will pen the script.
Dan Aykroyd has repeatedly kept Ghostbusters 3 hopes alive, but with Murray uninterested in the project and the passing of Harold Ramis, any hopes of bringing the crew back together were slim. So seeing Feig taking the reins for a whole new film could be fun, and the idea that this will be an all female cast is refreshing. Hit the jump for more.
Here’s Feig confirming the news:
While Feig confirmed his involvement via Twitter, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that he would be reuniting with The Heat‘s Katie Dippold. Not only is the film a strong female starring-vehicle, but it was also one of the highest grossing comedies of 2013.
Dippold has just completed writing the script for the sequel to The Heat, as well as a number of episodes for NBC’s Parks and Recreation. Feig is no stranger to directing female ensembles. In addition to The Heat, the director also helmed Bridesmaids.
There is no official timetable set for Ghostbusters 3, and no cast has been announced. We aren’t even sure if it will be Feig’s next movie. But we will be sure to keep you up to date as soon as anything develops.
