Many people who are fans of video game and who are in the gaming industry were shocked by the sudden and unexpected closing of Irrational Games, the makers of BioShock and BioShock Infinite, including many of the people who worked at the company. Though surely a difficult thing for the people it affected most to get past, life does indeed go on, as they say. And so it was only a matter of time before the tremendously talented group of people who worked on the BioShock games started making new games.
As it turns out, a pair of new games from new developers featuring the talents of former Irrational employees have now sprung up on Kickstarter, and so we’re happy to help spread the word. Both games—one titled The Black Glove from Day For Night Games, the other The Flame in the Flood from The Molasses Flood—look phenomenal in very different ways. One looks somewhat similar to BioShock (in a good way), while the other looks far from it.
You can read more about both projects and see gameplay for both titles in their Kickstarter videos below!
The Black Glove is a surrealist first-person gaming experience, which Day For Night plans to have ready and released on PC/Mac/Linux and other currently unannounced platforms sometime in 2015.
Here’s a description of the game:
Welcome to The Equinox, an eerie 1920s theatre that appears unstuck from conventional reality. A venue pervaded by weird dream logic, inexplicable holes in space, unshielded x-ray art installations, and tasteful use of crushed velvet.
The Equinox has three creators in residence: the artist Marisol, the filmmaker Avery Arnault, and musical act Many Embers. Their work is in bad shape when you arrive and it’s taken a strange, metaphysical toll on the theatre. Time flows backward in areas. Weird things peek out of once-sealed doorways. Unearthly music plays.
As the latest Curator, it falls to you to get The Equinox back on its feet. It’s your job to change the creators’ past to improve their work in the present. How? The hosts Hazel and Cribbage explain that there are “certain games of skill and chance that allow us to interact with… what you might call ‘fourth-dimensional space.'”
Day For Night is seeking $550,000 for the game, and at the writing of this post they’re at over $85,000 with 24 days to go. You can learn more and see the game in action in the video below, and you can also read more and find out what the perks are for backing the project over at its Kickstarter page.
The Flame in the Flood, again, is a much different adventure. This game is all about survival, almost like a new Oregon Trail for this generation. You play as a young girl in a world that’s different from our current world. Whether it is post-apocalyptic or just post-societal is not known, and does not matter. All that matters is staying alive.
Along with your dog companion and a raft, you’ll navigate the waterways of a massive flood. This river is procedurally generated in the game, and so your journey will be a unique one. As you travel you’ll focus on scrounging for food and supplies, finding shelter, and avoiding dangers like wildlife and the rains. Fatigue and hunger, hypothermia, snake bites, infections, and more can put your life in danger, and knowing what to find and what to do, such as crafting an herbal cure for example, is how you stay alive.
This journey of yours does have an ending, but there is no guarantee you’ll get to it. If you die, the game is over. No lives, no continuing your progress. Death is permanent, so it’s important to be careful and take the time to prepare and find the things you require to stay alive.
You can learn more and see the game in action below, and you can read much more and find out all of the perks for donating over at Kickstarter. The Molasses Flood is seeking $150,000 for their project, and as of the writing of this spotlight, they’re already at over $141,000 with 24 days remaining. No doubt this one will soar past its goal.
