Blut Aus Nord is a black metal band from France, but also so much more. Guitarist/vocalist Vindsval started out as a one-man project in 1994 under the moniker of Vlad. The name was soon changed to Blut Aus Nord, which translates to “blood from the north.” Musically, the project started out as fairly straight black metal, but quickly evolved to incorporate elements of industrial, ambient, avant garde and symphonic black metal.
Vindsval is not comfortable with the black metal label and has stated the following:
“Blut Aus Nord is an artistic concept. We don’t need to belong to a specific category of people to exist. If black metal is just this subversive feeling and not a basic musical style, then Blut Aus Nord is a black metal act. But if we have to be compared to all these childish satanic clowns, please let us work outwards [from] this pathetic circus. This form of art deserves something else than these mediocre bands and their old music composed 10 years before by someone else”
The band, which now includes two other regular members has, to date, issued 11 albums, 4 EPs, and 3 split releases, several of which were concept albums and/or trilogies. Their latest album, Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry is the third in a trilogy and landed at #8 on my Best Metal Albums of 2014 list. Here with the fourth track of that superb release is Blut Aus Nord with “Forhist.”
