The GoD List

Each and every week, I, “Vic Rattlehead!” Henchman 21 and “Eddie the Head!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of May 6, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I hope you all had a nice Free Comic Book Day and picked up lots of goodies, but it’s back to business as usual, and that means you’ve got to pay for your comics this week. There is a lot of great stuff out this week, including the start of a huge event, a comic that is an event every time it comes out, and some of the best comics from around the world. It’s time for The GoD List!

Afterlife with Archie #8 by Francesco Francavilla

Afterlife with Archie #8 (Archie Comics – $3.99) Every issue of Afterlife with Archie has become something for fans to look forward too. Afterlife with Archie doesn’t come out as often as one might like, but the story by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and the always amazing art by Francesco Francavilla makes every issue all the more anticipated. This issue delves into the origins of the zombie apocalypse currently besetting Riverdale. There’s also a healthy dose of The Shining in the issue. So, if you’ve been waiting for the next issue of Afterlife with Archie, it’s finally here. If you haven’t read Afterlife with Archie before, you should really pick up all the issues because it is a clever take on characters you know in a way you’ve never seen them before.

Rocket Girl #6 (Image Comics – $3.99) Rocket Girl has been away for a while, and I’m excited to see it back again. The first five issues of Rocket Girl introduced readers to DaYoung Johansson, a teenage cop sent back in time to 1986 to change the future. The story was a unique take on the concept of youthful rebellion, but the stand out was Amy Reeder’s energetic art that perfectly matched the story. Rocket Girl is a fun series that has a fresh take on both time travel and teenagers. Hopefully the creators do a good job of catching up new readers in this issue because it’s a sci-fi series worth picking up.

The Wicked + The Divine #10 (Image Comics – $3.50) I got more or less caught up on The Wicked + The Divine recently, and I think it finally clicked with me. Sure, the art by Jaime McKelvie was fantastic throughout all the issues I read, and that’s probably why I kept giving the series a chance. But somewhere around issue 7 or so, I started connecting with the story Kieron Gillen was laying down and I started enjoying the series for more than just the art. The Wicked + The Divine is still an odd series about a group of deities that come to Earth once a century only to burn out quickly. But it’s also about fandom in general, which is kind of close to my heart as a fan. I think it’s that aspect that has drawn me into the series, and I’m happy that it’s drawn me in fully. I think it will draw you in too.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Volume 9 (Vertical Comics – $29.95) It’s manga time! Gundam The Origin volume 9 is another great entry in one of my favorite series, and if you’re aware of the Original Gundam story already, this is the point where the heroes go back into space and our main character, Amuro Ray reunites with his father and meets someone very important to his future. Gundam remains one of the greatest of all anime series, and the expansion of the story in The Origin adds more layers, and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s art is fantastic and dynamic in ways you don’t always see in US artists. Also, the hardcover production that Vertical puts into these editions is awesome. These are books I want on my shelf for a long time.

Secret Wars #1 (Marvel Comics – $4.99) It’s on. I mean, you’re probably going to buy Secret Wars #1 anyway if you have any interest in Marvel. It’s got art by Esad Ribic, so at the very least it’s going to look pretty. This isn’t necessarily a recommendation, although I will be reading it. If you’re excited for Secret Wars or love a big event, read it. If you know what the deal is with Secret Wars and you still have no interest, well, as the boys in Iron Maiden say “Run to the hills.”

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency #1 cover comic book

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1 (of 5) (IDW Publishing – $3.99) Based on the novel by Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy author Douglas Adams comes this 5-issue comic book miniseries, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency from IDW. The book is a favorite of mine, especially since it references some Sherlock Holmes logic intertwined with Adams’ dry humor and science fiction and much much more, so I’m definitely going to check out this new miniseries. Dirk Gently is one of the great literary characters of our time, and should be more well known than he is.

By the way, I’m excited that I got to be Eddie The Head this time around. Up the Irons! \m/
