Academy Award winning Les Miserables and Interstellar star Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in Colossal.
In the movie, Hathaway will play a character named Gloria who’s dealing with one of life’s many rough spots after losing her job and her fiancé, leading her to run away from her life in New York and head back to where she grew up. But when she sees a news report of a massive lizard monster destroying Tokyo in Japan, she realizes that she’s connected to the disaster through the power of her mind, and that she needs to figure why and how she’s having such a major impact on the fate of the world.
Based on comparisons Colossal sounds pretty strange, and because of that mighty intriguing as well. The movie is described as both “Transformers versus Adaptation” and “Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich.” What all of that means exactly, I haven’t the foggiest. Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman are teaming up once again for a new monster movie, perhaps? No…but now I really want to see that happen.
The movie comes from the writer and director of the time travel thriller Timecrimes, The ABCs of Death segment “A Is for Apocalypse,” Open Windows, and the V/H/S: Viral segment “Parallel Monsters,” Nacho Vigalondo.
Of the movie, Vigalondo said:
“Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”
With Voltage Pictures CEO Nicolas Chartier adding:
“As huge fans of Timecrimes, we are thrilled to be collaborating with a filmmaker as talented as Nacho. He has written an extraordinarily unique piece of material and we look forward to seeing Anne in such a challenging role.”
Voltage is set to finance Colossal fully and present the project to foreign buyers at Cannes, with CAA representing domestic rights.
