Last week on Arrow, John Constantine guest starred! It made me indescribably happy to see Matt Ryan on the show, not only in present day Star City, but also in the flashbacks in Lian Yu, finally making that storyline a hell of a lot more interesting. After Oliver (Stephen Amell) finds out that Sara (Caity Lotz) is alive but soulless, and out to kill Thea (Willa Holland), he calls in a favor from a friend. That friend is John Constantine, whose life Oliver saved back on the island. Constantine takes Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Oliver into the other realm to fight for Sara’s soul, and they win. The Lance family has a tearful reunion. Holt (Echo Kellum) discovers that Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) is alive!

Spoilers below.

Arrow 4.6 “Lost Souls” recap/review: Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) can’t eat or sleep or shower, obsessed with finding Ray, who is really tiny. Turns out Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough) is keeping him like a pet goldfish. Lance (Paul Blackthorne) to the rescue once again, luring Darhk so they can follow him back to his lair.

Oliver feels like he is losing Felicity. It’s not so much that he feels jealous of now live Ray, it’s more she is belittling his ability to contribute because he’s not a geeky tech. Then when Felicity’s mom (Charlotte Ross) shows up, and Oliver’s secret almost-mom-in-law bonding comes out, Felicity thinks she is losing who she is, because of their relationship. Come on Felicity! Who wouldn’t lose themself in that man? Do you remember how long you waited for him? Mom swoops to the rescue with actual good advice and warm milk (blech!).

Diggle (David Ramsey) and Oliver bond over whisky and women. It is great (and a little unbelievable) that Oliver is insecure.

There is a really awesome scene where Felicity and Oliver have words over the walkies, and everyone listens with amusement, especially when she calls him “Chatty Cathy.”

The plan involves Oliver pretending to be captured, which is super brave against a dark (pun intended) magician like Darhk. he deflects arrow. Oliver has a little magic of his own, which he never really showed until after Darhk and Constantine showed up. It’s more like Houdini escapist magic.

The Lian Yu scenes interested me less now that Constantine left, but magic instead of drugs seem to be the goal. Stay tuned.

The fight scene in Darhk’s fortress is well choreographed, and one of those colorful spectacles, where you don’t know where to look first, because everything is colorful and fast.

Of course they rescue Ray, and are glad to see he didn’t lose himself, geeking over the H.I.V.E – Spectre connection. Love Ray!

I swear I couldn’t figure out if Darhk wanted to power up the Hellraiser box, or revealed plans for the Death Star, but whatever it was, it looked ominous.

Riveting episode. Every week peels back another layer, while also subtly setting up Legends of Tomorrow.

Arrow airs Wednesday nights at 8pm ET
