The brothers are back! It’s scary to think that it’s been more than 2 years since the end of season five of The Venture Bros., but yes it’s been that long. Sure we did get one hour-long special about this time last year, but that’s hardly enough for fans of the show. Fortunately, The Venture Bros. season six starts on Adult Swim on Sunday, January 31st at midnight, which means 8 weeks of the best damn show on TV.
The season starts off where “All This and Gargantua-2” left off, with Doc Venture having inherited his brothers’ business and a sweet new pad in New York City. Now the whole family is getting used to life in a new city as well as dealing with being fabulously rich. Meanwhile, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is trying to rebuild the Guild of Calamitous Intent. There’s been quite a change to the old status quo, which I’m not sure is good or bad for new viewers.
First and foremost, this episode did what a comedy show is supposed to do and that is make me laugh. There is the same whipsmart mix of high brow and low brow jokes along with plenty of action. Beyond that, the episode has all the elements that made me fall in love with the series in the first place. There is a great mix of old characters and new characters, including some hilarious send up of DC and Marvel characters that I can’t wait to see more of. In addition, the animation for the series continues to be top quality, and this may be one of the best looking episodes yet.
Is this the most accessible episode? No, but it is the six season, so accessibility is not the main concern at this point. If you need to catch up, the show is available on Hulu or the Adult Swim app or you can buy the DVDs, so there are plenty of ways to get caught up.
If you’re making a list of the funniest shows on TV and you don’t mention the Venture Bros., your list is incomplete. Check out a clip and trailer from the new season below and get ready for season six of The Venture Bros. on tonight at midnight.
