A couple of weeks back a brief teaser was released for Oats Studios, a new endeavor from District 9, Elysium, and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp. Then last week the first trailer was released for the project, simply called Volume 1 at the moment.
Now a second trailer for Volume 1 has been released, and you can check it out below along with the previously released trailers if you haven’t seen them yet.
If you recall Blomkamp was gearing up to direct the next movie in the Alien franchise, a “genetic sibling” to the first two movies in the franchise. Sigourney Weaver was even confirmed to be reprising her role as Ripley. And wouldn’t you know it, Weaver shows up in the trailers below.
Then Ridley Scott came back into the picture when it was reported that Prometheus 2 could be his next project after The Martian. It was, as it turned out, eventually taking the form of the recently released Alien: Covenant. This led to Blomkamp’s Alien movie being put on indefinite hold while Scott made his latest entry in the series. Time will tell if Blomkamp will ever get to make his movie, or if it’s now dead with Scott’s plan to kick off a new trilogy with Covenant.
Blomkamp then moved on to another science fiction project, a time travel movie titled The Gone World. However, given that that movie was announced nearly two years ago and Blomkamp is now working on these experimental short films, it’s unclear where it currently stands.
As for Oats Studios, Volume 1 and any future experimental short films will be released on platforms like YouTube and Steam.
Experimental films from Neill Blomkamp’s OATS STUDIOS, coming soon to STEAM.
