‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ Original 1951 Film on DVD & Blu-ray Today!

Fox Home Entertainment has released the 1951 science fiction classic The Day The Earth Stood Still as a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD and Special Edition Blu-ray, on sale today.

Both editions are packed with bonus materials, like feature commentary by director Robert Wise as well as content new to this re-release, like commentary by film and music historians, along with an isolated score track.

The big sell for me on this re-release, aside from the commentaries (love commentaries) is the “Making Of The Day The Earth Stood Still“ featurette and “Decoding Klaatu Barada Nikto: Science Fiction As A Metaphor,” which is an audio presentation of the original short story.

The blu-ray edition also includes two new, exclusive-to-blu-ray extras “Gort Command!,” an arcade-style shooting gallery game and “Interactive Theremin: Create Your Own Score,” where viewers can re-score the film’s opening sequence.

Both editions contain an exclusive look at the upcoming remake starring Starring Keanu Reeves And Jennifer Connelly, out in theaters on December 12, 2008.

See below for a full list of features for the 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray editions.

‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ International Trailer
space
BAADASSSSS!   |
space

The international trailer for Fox’s upcoming remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still is now online and you can watch it right here below.

This latest in the endless train of unnecessary remakes is directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Keanu Reeves in the role originally played by Michael Rennie. Reeves is supported by Oscar-winners Jennifer Connelly and Kathy Bates.

The movie looks interesting with a direction that leans toward more ecological themes than the post-war threat of nuclear Armageddon that haunted the original, but with the exception of a cool spaceship and the awesomeness that is Klaatu’s badass robot protector Gort, Robert Wise’s original film was big on ideas and short on visual effects. The new version seems to ride high on hollow CGI spectacle.

With the planet facing the worst environmental crisis it has seen since its earliest days, this new Day could either strike a chord with socially-unaware audiences or get lost in the holiday stampede. One thing’s for sure, few actors have the look of a strange, otherworldly being that Keanu Reeves possesses, and the dude’s not even wearing make-up.

Judge for yourself when the Earth begins standing around minding its own biz beginning December 12, 2008.

Stood StillDuring Fox’s encore presentation of the Fringe pilot last night, a new 7-minuted extended footage from The Day The Earth Stood Still was shown.

You can watch it here below.

The footage shown in this newly released clip is the same scenes that were premiered this past July at the San Diego Comic-Con (see previous coverage).

It begins with Jennifer Connelly‘s character Dr. Helen Benson being called for duty during the military evacuation. We see her stepson Jacob played by Jaden Smith, at the beginning, as well as at the very end talking to the humanoid alien Klaatu (Keanu Reeves). We see the landing of one of Klaatu’s spherical spaceships and the subsequent destruction of parts of the Earth. There’s also a lengthy part, previously seen in a clip called “The Interrogation,” that shows Klaatu being interrogated and the consequences of it.

The Day The Earth Stood Still hits theaters December 12, 2008.
