We’ve already seen Queen Elizabeth II & James Bond Parachute Into The Olympics Opening Ceremony today, and soon after, Mary Poppins defeated several villains in British literature, like Harry Potter‘s Lord Voldemort.
During the “Bedtime Story” segment of Danny Boyle‘s 3-hour spectacular Opening Ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics, popular British literary baddies like Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmatians), Captain Hook (Peter Pan), the Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), and the aforementioned He Who Must Not Be Named (although, oops, I did name him) invaded the dreams of sleeping boys and girls in hospital beds. Thankfully, the villains were ultimately defeated by Mary Poppins – actually, 30 of so of them, who come down on wires into Olympic Stadium, each holding the iconic Poppins umbrella.

Note – the video below was posted on the official London 2012 Olympics YouTube page, but was at some point made “private.” The photo above is a screenshot taken from the video, so it was running for quite some time before the channel changed the settings. There’s a chance it will be set back to public after the NBC broadcast is over on the West Coast. Otherwise, we’ll post a replacement as soon as one is available.
Update: NBC now has this segment on their site. It’s still from YouTube, but they removed external site embedding for it, so head over to nbcolympics.com to watch.
