Steven Spielberg Says ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Is The Superhero Film That Impressed Him The Most

Superhero films can be a dime a dozen, especially since a lot of them come out every other if not every month of the year. So it would be hard for one to make an everlasting impression on anyone, let alone someone like Steven Spielberg.

Now, the legendary filmmaker, who is at the Cannes Film Festival to help promote is upcoming film, The BFG – check out the new trailer here – is talking about which superhero films are his favorite. And don’t worry, he is not a part of the conspiracy, as his list is a pretty nice mix from Marvel and DC. Check out which of the superhero films are his favorite below.

The following quote was translated from Portuguese to English from the Brazilian movie website Omelete:

I like Richard Donner’s Superman, The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan, and the first Iron Man, but the superhero film that impressed me most is one that does not take itself too seriously: Guardians of the Galaxy. When the projection was over, I left with the feeling of having seen something new in movies, without any cynicism or fear of being dark when needed.

While it is a bit broken, you pretty much get what Spielberg is trying to say, especially when he names a film like Guardians of the Galaxy as the one that left a huge impression on him. The film proves you don’t need to be dark to be a great superhero film.

Of course, Spielberg’s comments are a bit odd considering what he has said about the genre before. According to him, it will be like Westerns and die by the wayside. This elicited responses from the likes of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who says that the genre would probably lose its popularity, but it would be a while before that happens as it took 40-50 years before many lost interest in Westerns. Even so, Western films still do pop up on occasion, such as the upcoming The Magnificent Seven remake. BvS director Zack Snyder said that those comments put more pressure on filmmakers not just to crank out superhero movies.

While favorites and best films are subjective, it’s hard not to agree with Richard Donner’s Superman, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy being some of the best superhero films of the genre. Hard not to make a case for Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Captain America: Civil War, the latter of which he probably didn’t see considering his busy schedule.
