James Gunn

Last summer, James Gunn was in the midst of preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the closing installment of the Guardians trilogy. What happened after that can only be described as a whirlwind of crazy. First he was fired by Disney for some old tweets that were dug up. Then he was hired by WB to write The Suicide Squad, which eventually led to him directing as well. Finally, he was rehired by Disney to finish the Guardians trilogy.

The filmmaker, who is usually vocal on social media, has been silent about those recent events. At least up until now. Gunn is now opening up about what has happened to him, how he thought he would never be rehired, and the status of both The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. See what he had to say below.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Team

Eight months after Disney fired James Gunn over decade-old distasteful tweets, the studio has reversed its decision and has officially reinstated the filmmaker as the director of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

Deadline says Gunn will still continue to work on The Suicide Squad before moving on to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, a film, which was supposed to start production earlier this year. The next sequel would have ushered in Phase 4 of the MCU, something that we are still unclear about.

Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in a state of limbo right now. The film, which was set to begin production this month for a 2021 release, has been put on an indefinite hold after Disney fired James Gunn for tasteless jokes he posted on Twitter over a decade ago. Even though the director has repeatedly apologized for these tweets, the studio felt that they could not be associated with anyone who made awful jokes and terminated their relationship despite him giving the studio two successful films and the keys to developing a comic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While Gunn is no longer working on the film, there are talks that his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could still be used. Sean Gunn, his brother, stated that it would be. And now Star Lord himself, Chris Pratt, is saying that it will be used, and that the script is “off the chain.” More on the report below.

Dave Bautista May Not Return For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Many have been vocal about how James Gunn was unjustly fired after years old obscene tweets resurfaced because of an alt-right ultra conservative hit job. But none have been more vocal than Dave Bautista. The actor who plays Drax has gone on record saying he would consider not returning to reprise his role. That was followed by an ultimatum that if they did not use Gunn’s script, he would walk out on the project entirely, regardless of contractual obligations. Since then, Disney and Marvel Studios have decided to put the sequel on hold until they can figure out the next move.

While it’s still not clear if the studio will use Gunn’s script – he had finished an early draft before he was fired – it appears Bautista may not return at all. More on the story below.

Because of all of the controversies that lead up to James Gunn being fired from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, it is starting to look like the highly anticipated sequel will have to be put on hold. New reports say that even though the early stages of pre-production have begun in Atlanta, crew members are being sent home and are free to look for work elsewhere. More on the story below.
