Chris Evans has taken up the shield as Captain America for the past five years, but now the actor will be playing a different kind of hero. Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for Marc Webb‘s Gifted, a heartwarming film that centers on Frank (Evans), a single parent who’s raising Mary (Mckenna Grace), his 7-year-old niece who just so happens to be a math prodigy.
While he does his best to honor his late sister’s wish of giving her a normal life, he is put at odds with his mother (Lindsay Duncan), who wants to enroll Mary in a special program for gifted students. Check out the trailer below.
It’s great to see Webb, who directed The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, getting back to more down-to-earth material and away from superhero films with huge studio oversight. The filmmaker has also been using his talents on the hit musical sitcom Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is now on its second season.
While the trailer does feel like you are watching the entire film, there is a sense that you don’t know who has Mary’s best interest at heart, and therefore you do not know who is going to win. On one hand, do you hold Mary’s skills back to honor her late mother’s wishes or do ignore her mother’s wishes in order for her to reach her full potential? There is no real easy solution for this.
Yeah, the tone may come off as a little schmaltzy and Mary being a combination of cute and little miss attitude may be cheesy, but it has all the makings of a feel-good film. It’s a nice break from all the usual tentpole films that are out there.
The film also stars Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.
Written by Tom Flynn, Gifted opens in theaters on April 17, 2017.
