We see a lot of video games made based on major movie releases and vice versa, and most of these are pretty forgettable.
One of the movies you likely would never ever expect to hear about a video game adaptation for would be Christopher Nolan‘s mind and physics-bending summer blockbuster, Inception. But according to Nolan, it is happening, though probably not for a long while.
While talking to Entertainment Weekly about everything from possible Inception sequels to his new Batman sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, the director confirmed that a game was indeed in the works. Nolan says “I always imagined Inception to be a world where a lot of other stories could take place. At the moment, the only direction we’re channeling that is by developing a video game set in the world.” He also went on to say that while a sequel isn’t out of the question, it’s “not something I’ve given a lot of thought about,” but that video games are “something I’ve wanted to explore.”
The thought of a video game set in that world is pretty intriguing, but the track record for movie-based games is weak at best. If everything plays out it should be a lot of fun to see what they come up with, but at the moment this is just an idea in development, and any actual game won’t be seen until probably after The Dark Knight Rises.
Speaking of the Batman sequel, Nolan also reaffirmed that this third film would be the last they were doing. This is no big shock as it always seemed like three would be the absolute most they would do, but apparently some people out there felt there was still hope for more. Personally, trilogies always seem to be the best way to go — we get our fair share, but no suffocation — and I’m excited to see it all wrapped up.
A pen and paper roleplaying game seems the most appropriate for such a setting, but we’ll see. I feel like a video game could never do a dream like world with all it’s impossibilities justice. I feel like a dream on rails would bore me.
