Game developer Sega announced today that they have signed Captain America: The First Avenger star Chris Evans to voice the title character in the upcoming Captain America: Super Soldier video game. His likeness will also be used for the game.

The game will be a third-person shooter and feature an original story where you fight through Hydra castle, facing many “legendary villains.” What villains you ask? Well listed are Red Skull, Iron Cross, Baron Strucker, Madame Hydra, and Arnim Zola. The game sounds like a good old hack and slasher from the description, using melee combos and shield attacks (see full official synopsis here below).

This is all well and good. Captain America in the game will also look like Captain America in the movie. Signing the star of the movie you are trying to link the game to is great, who wouldn’t want to do that? The problem with games based on comics, or movies for that matter, isn’t that the main characters don’t look or sound like themselves — It’s that the game itself is terrible. (With the exception of Arkham Asylum.)

Did you play the Iron Man game? It was virtually unplayable. So while I’m all for signing Chris Evans up, and having him make a little more moolah out of being cast as Cap, please just make the game actually good. Unfortunately, I did see something in the press release that makes me think it will be garbage. The game comes out in 2011 on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, and DS. How do you make an action third-person game, that is decent, that will run on a Playstation and a DS? I don’t think you can. Prove me wrong SEGA, I dare you.

In Captain America: Super Soldier, players become Captain America as he faces the Red Skull and his Hydra army in an epic third-person action adventure set in the darkest days of World War II. Wielding Captain America’s legendary shield, gamers will engage in free-flowing combat and acrobatic platforming to infiltrate a mysterious castle overtaken by Hydra forces, where they’ll battle a host of nefarious enemies serving the Red Skull, including the infamous Iron Cross, Baron Strucker and Madame Hydra. Players must defeat the evil scientist Arnim Zola and his wartime experiments, combining powerful melee combos and shield attacks to devastating effect.
