What If...?

Although Disney will be launching Disney+ later this November, there won’t be any original Marvel Studios content readily available. However, come next year, all of their stories will coincide with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much more so than any of the Marvel Entertainment shows have. But one of the more interesting shows that we can expect to see is What If…?, an interesting new show that will allow audiences to explore the MCU in new ways by looking at various “what if?” scenarios.

Though the show is still in the early stages of development we know that it will be Marvel Studios’ first animated series, and at D23 Expo we got our first peek at it. This included a look at one of the scenarios: what if Peggy Carter got the super-soldier serum instead of Captain America, Steve Rogers? More on this below.

Our look at What If…? starts off with what would happen if Steve Rogers never got the super-soldier serum, but Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) got it instead. It is an intriguing question, answered through an animated medium. Not only has she gotten more muscular, but she is getting a partner too. In the footage that we saw, we see her use the vibranium shield, with a British flag emblem on it, to flip a car over. In another scene, she is the one in the chamber that Steve was supposed to be in. Finally, she meets her new partner, Steve, who is flying in a vintage mech suit. It all ends with Peggy riding on the back of the suit that Steve is piloting.

Other scenes include Bucky as the Winter Soldier, in a subway car facing down a zombified Steve Rogers. And another shows off what I assumed to be T’Challa as Star-Lord.

The show will reinvent the MCU as we know it. By having something like What If…?, we can see the MCU in a whole new way. Of course, it is somewhat disappointing that Spider-Man cannot be a part of any of that given recent events. But Marvel Studios has been able to survive without the webslinger for so long.

We also learned that Jeffery Wright is joining the MCU as The Watcher, a celestial being tasked with watching over Earth.

Other characters we can expect to see include Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), Thanos (Josh Brolin), Arnim Zola (Toby Jones), Korath the Conqueror (Djimon Hounsou), Taserface (Chris Sullivan), and Yondu (Michael Rooker). Even The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) will be in it.
