‘RoboCop’ Remake Director Discusses His Vision For The Film
space
BAADASSSSS!   |

Ever since MGM announced several years back that they were putting a remake of the 1987 sci-fi action classic RoboCop into production not much progress has been made, which fans of the original film would see as a blessing. For a time Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) was attached to direct the remake, but he moved on to other things. Most recently Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) was handed the reins of the RoboCop redux, and the director gave an interview to Comic Book Movie about his plans for the remake and what he hopes to accomplish by taking on a beloved genre film.

On making his RoboCop stand apart from the Paul Verhoeven-directed original:

“I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated. If you are a man changes into a robot, how do you do that? What is the difference between humans and robots developed? What is free will? What does it mean to lose your free will? Those are the issues that I think. “

Both Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) have been rumored for the title role which Peter Weller turned into a cinematic icon in the original. Wagner Moura, the star of the Elite Squad movies, is also being eyed for a potential role in the remake which by his own admission the actor would definitely not pass on: “I love working with Padilha, I will join him if he invites me. I don’t think that there is going to be a character for me at this movie at all, but if he wants to work with me again…”

  1. I’m not picking on the Director for his broken English but it does seem like he’s missing something, like perhaps he doesn’t really understand Officer Murphy or RoboCop as well as he’d like us to believe.
