Platinum Dunes Negotiating To Take Over Producing The ‘Halloween’ Franchise

BAADASSSSS!   |

Halloween

Between bouts of orchestrating giant alien robot punch-ups and fanning the rage flames of Internet trolls who will still see his movies no matter what crazy crap he pulls on them, Michael Bay is collecting moribund movie franchises like properties on the Monopoly game board. In recent weeks online news sites have been treating the in-demand blockbuster schlock master’s plans for revitalizing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (which will now be called Ninja Turtles and the title characters will be alien in origin) like they were continuing developments in the Trayvon Martin case.

Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company are now looking the Halloween movie series to their stable of brand name cinematic properties.

Development on a Halloween sequel at Dimension Films has been stalled for some time and the movie, which was to have been made by the Drive Angry writer/director team of Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier (who were once attached to a Hellraiser remake) and filmed in 3D, now appears to be as dead at the studio as one of Michael Myers’ hapless victims. Platinum Dunes heads Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are reportedly negotiating with Dimension, which has produced the Halloween series since 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, to take over producing duties on future sequels. Dimension will continue to distribute the films.

It’s not known yet if Platinum Dunes will take a start-from-scratch approach to the next Halloween movie or stick to the original plan of making it a third film in the rebooted franchise which started in 2007 with Rob Zombie‘s much-reviled but profitable remake. Following the lackluster grosses on Zombie’s 2009 sequel Dimension decided to piggyback on the emerging 3D craze with the third film. Platinum Dunes has not produced a 3D movie yet. The company specializes in money-making remakes of classic horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, Friday the 13th, and most recently A Nightmare on Elm Street. So far only the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake has spawned a follow-up.
