Star Trek 2

In what should be exciting news for movie fans everywhere, we are learning that J.J. Abrams has shot some of Star Trek 2 in IMAX as well.

However, we shouldn’t take the news as a complete surprise considering images from the set show an IMAX camera is present. The film will still be converted into 3D, as well. We still don’t know how much was shot using the IMAX format or how much of what was shot will make it into the theatrical cut, but knowing that Star Trek will be presented in a true IMAX format is comforting. I’m sure everyone prefers true IMAX over its horrible digitally converted one.

It would seem to make very little sense to film using the IMAX cameras only to digitally convert the whole thing. Since the film will be in IMAX, scenes using the technology will fill the entire sense, allowing the audience to be a part of the film itself.

I’m glad to see more and more filmmakers opting to use the IMAX cameras as opposed to altering them to fit IMAX screens. It’s a fun experience that is well worth the price of admission. Still not sure if 3D will add anything to the experience, but if Abrams can use it the right way – like Ridley Scott did for Prometheus – I think Star Trek 2 3D could actually be fun.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin, are all coming back for Star Trek 2. Joining them will be Benedict Cumberbatch. Director J.J. Abrams also returns to helm the film, which will open in theaters on May 17th, 2013.
