Gareth Edwards‘ Monsters was an unsuspected hit in 2010, and because of its success, Legendary Pictures hired him to helm the reboot of Godzilla. The low budget film features some awesome set pieces and spectacular visuals that looked so real, you thought the it’d ran a huge tab. Of course since the film was a hit, talks of a sequel swirled.
But even after the success of the film died down, those talks of a developing a sequel went with it. Until now. According to Screendaily (via The Playlist) Tom Green has been hired to direct the sequel to Monsters; Monsters: The Dark Continent.
Now before you go into an outrage, it’s not the Tom Green that delivered laughs on MTV. No, this Tom Green developed the hit UK show Misfits to television screens. Think of Misfits as the UK version of Heroes, but with juvenile delinquents with superpowers. In addition to the recent hire, Jay Basu is being brought in to write the screenplay for the film.
That being said, it doesn’t mean that this film will actually happen. Often times studios will bring screenwriters in to pen drafts for a sequel years before production even starts. So if you are excited to see that Monsters: The Dark Continent is happening, you may still want to keep your fingers crossed, because nothing is set in stone yet.
These moves, however, signify that the necessary steps are being taken in order for this sequel to happen.
