Aphrodite IX #3 was a bit of a surprise to me. I had read and loved the original series, but this one is quite a far departure from that. That being said, it has its good and bad points like any comic.

Writer Matt Hawkins takes this long dormant title in a WHOLE different direction. And, I have to say, it’s OK. Not great, but not horrible either. The first few pages were a little hard to get through. His introduction is muddled and hard to follow if you’re new to the title like me. But, before too long, you get the gist of what the story is and the details of the world that the story is set in. After you’re settled in, the story gets pretty interesting. There’s decent amounts of character drama, action and intrigue.

I’ll admit it. I’m the odd man out. I’m not a big fan of artist Stjepan Sejic. While his art is beautiful on one level, I honestly don’t think a monthly sequential comic is the right place for it. Some of the panels are really nice looking, but the action heavy ones look like a bad Cartoon Network CGI show. Again, I know Sejic has a big following, but I’m honestly just not a big fan.

I’m not sure where I stand on this comic, and that should tell you where I stand. I don’t love it and I don’t hate it.
