But that world is gone, replaced by a seemingly more violent and harsh reality. From their deep slumber arose Nine who would rule this planet, each in its own way. This is a story of but one of those fated to be a god amongst men. This tale is known as Athena IX #1. The time of the Ascension is here; few would recognize that term, however. For the most part, it seems that people living are unaware of anything other than oppression. Of course, Athena herself calls it order. Located in the far north of the Old World, the less than hospitable region has been transformed into an industrial city-state where every citizen is given a task, a purpose. Every single person is a cog in the proverbial wheel that keeps their world contained and self sufficient.

Top Cow Productions, Inc.
Release Date: July 17, 2013
Cover Price: $2.99 Aphrodite IX #3 was a bit of a surprise to me. I had read and loved the original series, but this one is quite a far departure from that. That being said, it has its good and bad points like any comic. Writer Matt Hawkins takes this long dormant title in a WHOLE different direction. And, I have to say, it’s OK. Not great, but not horrible either. The first few pages were a little hard to get through. His introduction is muddled and hard to follow if you’re new to the title like me. But, before too long, you get the gist of what the story is and the details of the world that the story is set in. After you’re settled in, the story gets pretty interesting. There’s decent amounts of character drama, action and intrigue.

This is the moral conundrum issued in Top Cow’s Aphrodite IX #2. Written by Matt Hawkins with illustrations from Stjepan Sejic, we are thrust into the harsh, violent and dystopian future earth alongside Aphrodite as she tries to find her place in the new world. The struggle continues between Marcus’ race of genetically altered humans and their cybernetic, humanoid enemies led by Executor Chronos. Unfortunately for Marcus and his people, their new ally, Aphrodite IX””the green-haired female powerhouse with no memory of her past””is in fact an assassin by design; and what Marcus and Aphrodite don’t realize is that she is being controlled by Chronos’ new ally and Aphrodite’s old handler, Robert J. Burch. Already unaware of killing Marcus’ father, the king, Aphrodite is on a new mission that could very well bring on the collapse of the kingdom.
