The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Vacation!” Henchman 21 and “All I Really Wanted!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of April 30, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Man o manatee is it a packed week. Sooooo many awesome books coming out this week that I just have to make this an oversized list of books this week. These are the kind of weeks that just make you sit back and realize that comics are awesome and we are lucky to be able to read them. Just take a second right now to think about all the great times comics have given you. And now that you’ve thought about that, here’s a reminder that this week is Free Comic Book Day, so make sure you take your kids, and your friends and anyone else you can find and get them to a comic store this Saturday. And when you get there, tell them The GoD List sent you!

Southern Bastards #1 by Jason Latour

Southern Bastards #1 (Image Comics – $3.50) I’d say this is the most anticipated issue of the week, if it wasn’t for one other book out this week. This is certainly the most anticipated Image book out this week, as writer Jason Aaron returns to his indie roots with Southern Bastards #1. Southern Bastards harkens back to Aaron’s days writing Scalped for Vertigo, but looks like it adds in some of the craziness that Aaron has put in a lot of his Marvel work. Image describes the series as “a southern fried crime series that’s like the Dukes of Hazzard meets the Coen Brothers”¦on meth.” That’s got my money right there. Jason Aaron is one of the best writers working today and as good as his superhero stuff is, but I’m excited to see him go back to a good old crime story. Yee haw!

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel Comics – $5.99) And then we come to the biggest book of the week, Amazing Spider-Man #1. I don’t think I need to sell too many of you on this, given the amount of copies that Marvel is saying they sold to retailers (more than 500,000 the last time I checked). Between this issue and the movie coming out, it could be a pretty good week for Spider-man fans.

The Flash Annual #3 (DC Comics – $4.99) Wally West is back!!!! I know there will be a lot of Flash fans happy to read this, even though it looks like they may be doing something quite different with Wally. Still, it’s just feels right to have Wally West back in the DCU. It’s easy to forget that he was The Flash for a whole generation of readers, and there are more than a few readers who prefer him over Barry Allen, the current and former Flash. Hopefully Wally’s return lives up to those fans hopes.

Atomic Robo, Volume 8 (Red 5 Comics – $3.50) You should be okay reading the newest series of Atomic Robo, but for the first time in the series, it will kind of help to read this before diving in. Fortunately, it’s always easy to recommend any series of Atomic Robo, especially this one. Atomic Robo and the Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur is one of the funniest minis in the Robo catalog, with Robo and his team journeying an underground world full of rock monsters ruled by the tyrannical and often scientifically incorrect Dr. Dinosaur. The ends on a cliffhanger which leads directly into”¦

Atomic Robo and the Knights of the Golden Circle #1 (of 5) (Red 5 Comics – $3.50) Atomic Robo. In the Wild West. What could go wrong?

Pretty Deadly, Volume 1 (Image Comics – $9.99) I’ll admit, I wasn’t blown away by the story in the first few issues of Pretty Deadly, although the series did improve over the course of those issues. My hope is that if you read the five issues collected in volume one, the story will make more sense than it did to me reading it in serialized form. I want to enjoy Pretty Deadly, mostly because I am a big fan of artist Emma Rios, and say what you will about the story, the art was always solid. Part of me wants writer Kelly Sue DeConnick to tone down some of the weirder elements of the series, but the other part wants her to maintain the unique tone of the series. It may just be that this series isn’t for me, but at $9.99 for 5 issues, this is worth buying just to see if this is something you’d like to keep reading.

CBLDF Presents: Liberty Hardcover (Image Comics – $24.99) The CBLDF Presents: Liberty hardcover collects the 5 Liberty Annuals from 2008 through 2012, which is cool because it collects works from every top talent you can think of in the comics world. There’s a Walking Dead story by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. There’s work from Neil Gaiman, Ed Brubaker, Dawryn Cooke, Mike Allred, and Garth Ennis. That’s just a small sample of the talents who worked on this book, I could figuratively go on for hours listing everyone. So you get a bunch of great comics, plus all proceeds from the sale of this book go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a group that helps to keep comics in readers hands and protects your freedom to read what you want. So buy this for yourself and buy this for everyone else.

Chew #41 (Image Comics – $2.99) Still awesome. You should still be buying it and if you’re not, shame on you. “SHAME!” I say.

Rachel Rising #25 (Abstract Studios – $3.99) You should also be buying this because Terry Moore’s art is consistently amazing, and each issue finds a new way to creep me out. Also, I may have mentioned this before, but this book smells the way comics are supposed to smell. Just trust me on this.

Silver Surfer #2 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Did you read that first issue of Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s new Silver Surfer series? If not, you really owe it to yourself to pick it up. Silver Surfer may be my favorite of the new Marvel NOW! series, and I freaking LOVED the first two issues of Moon Knight. Slott has already given us a fun scenario for the Silver Surfer to roam around in. He’s created an interesting new female character for the Surfer to hang out with. And then you’ve got Mike Allred’s expressive pencils and Laura Allred’s gorgeous colors and you’ve got a book that should not be missed.

Empress Eve

Doc Savage #5 cover

Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze #5 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) Writer Chris Roberson has given us back pulp hero Doc Savage and I’m enjoying this series from Dynamite very much. Great artwork by Bilquis Evely.

Shadowman: End Times #1 (Valiant Entertainment – $3.99 I’ll admit, the Shadowman comics were not on my radar until now. GoD’s Waerloga69 gives Shadowman: End Times #1 a major thumbs up in his review of this first issue in a 3-issue miniseries from writer Peter Milligan. This series has something to do with the end of days, which is always interesting, and Waerloga69 says, “I think we are in for a real treat with this apocalyptic arc.” His recommendation is enough for me and it should be for you, too.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #4 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.50) This pull is an obvious one, as we’re in issue #4 of this new Serenity series, which takes place in Joss Whedon’s Firefly universe and features all your favorite characters from the long-cancelled television series. A must-have for Firefly fans.

The Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy #3 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.99) I love the The Terminator franchise, so jumping on to The Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy was a no-brainer. In this new comic book series from Dark Horse, Skynet has targeted scientist Elise Fong, much like they did with Sarah Connor, but this time around there’s no resistance fighter who comes back in time! If you enjoy The Terminator, give this series a chance.

Loki: Ragnarok and Roll #3 (BOOM! Studios – $3.99) Loki is a god … of rock and roll!!! (I say that last part like Gene Simmons on the KISS Alive! version of “Let Me Go Rock and Roll.”) Need I say more? Pick up this fun comic from BOOM! It’s a 4-issue miniseries, so grab them all!

Alice In Comicland (Hardcover) (IDW Publishing – $29.99) This 168-page hardcover from IDW collects various cartoonists and comic book artists take on Lewis Carroll’s most famous creation – Alice (as in Alice In Wonderland, of course!). Alice fans will definitely want to get their hands on this.

Some of the greatest comic book artists ever to put pen to paper tumble down the rabbit hole for their own unique look at Lewis Carroll’s famous creation! Walt Kelly, Alex Toth, Dan DeCarlo, George Carlson, MAD men Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis and Dave Berg, and many more visit Wonderland! You’ll be astonished to see Alice gruesomely starring in the banned horror comic book stories of the 1950s, as the basis of a romance comic, riding on a flying saucer, meeting Santa Claus, as a teeny-bopper, hanging out with famous comic characters”¦ The fascinating-sometimes bizarre-comics, the rare original art, a special introduction by Mark Burstein, president of Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and a revealing foreword by award-winning comics historian Craig Yoe make this book truly a wonder! Alice in Comicland will leave you grinning like the Cheshire cat!
