Star Trek #32 continues the adaptation of the classic Star Trek series episode, “I Enterprise,” updated to fit into the new Star Trek continuity!

For this issue, writer Mike Johnson does a great job at wrapping up “I Enterprise.” We get some new spins and a couple of surprises, but what we get most of this issue is some GREAT character development. We all know who Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are, but things have changed a little in this new universe, and with it, so have those characters. We get to know a little bit more about them through the conflicts that they go through in this issue. And, it’s a surprisingly nice change of pace. This is a fantastically written installment by Johnson, who has been a bright spot in this series.

I wish I liked artist Erfan Fajar just a little bit more. His work is perfectly fine, but it lacks a certain “wow” factor that’s needed in comics since comics use only one of your five senses. His style is very simple with just a dash of detail thrown in, but not enough to really matter. In places, it looks like he simply forgot to add some facial lines in and a lot of characters appear one-dimensional as a result. He has no problem with anatomy or backgrounds of laying out a page, I just wish he would’ve either went totally simple or thrown in more detail. Either way would’ve made the art go from acceptable to good, but as it is, it’s stuck somewhere in middle.

Even though the art’s not an out of the park home run, this issue is an entertaining read. At its core, it’s a good, solid Star Trek comic, and if that’s what you’re looking for, than you’ve found it.
