Before we get to this week’s Mad Men 7.9 “New Business,” review, let’s take a look at what happened last week on 7.8 “Severance.”

Well the severance in question was Ken’s (Aaron Staton), whom Roger (John Slattery) fired at the behest of Ferguson Donnelly. Ken may have only one eye but he had the last laugh as he succeeded his father-in-law as head of Dow Chemicals and now is a client Roger has to please. Sweet karma!

Don (Jon Hamm) is back at the top of his advertising game, but the womanizing is leaving him hollow. He wants to reconnect with Rachel Mencken (Maggie Siff) after dreaming of her, which was a haunting foreshadowing, because she had passed away the week before.

Joan (Christina Hendricks) gets severely sexually harassed by clients, then gets in a snit with Peggy (Elizabeth Moss) when Peggy kinda alludes to it being her fault. Peggy goes on a unexpectedly wonderful blind date, then thinks again during next harsh light of the morning.

Mad Men 7.9 “New Business” review: The scene opens with Don making shakes for his kids in Betty’s (January Jones) house. He goes to leave and looks back at the picture this family makes with such a look of naked longing. This is what he is searching for. That he is just realizing it now, is what makes it so tragic. Betty was a super bitch though when she was his wife. She’s mellowed out a bit with Henry (Christopher Stanley).

Don is in the midst of his divorce with Megan (Jessica Pare) and she’s flying in to get her things. He ends up surprising her and us. Wait and see.

He’s very depressed and tries to fix it the only way he knows how – to stalk that waitress again.

“It’s 3 in the morning. You know why you’re here. Do you want a drink or not?” He answered the door in a jacket and tie. Does this guy have moves or what? He doesn’t even need moves with that face, and he’s got better moves then any guy ever. This woman has her own story (don’t they all?).

Harry (Rich Sommer) is disgusting. You’ll find out why soon enough if you didn’t already feel that way.

Guest star alerts! Julia Ormond and Mimi Rogers!

This show is so good. Every little detail has a purpose. In fact, that may not even be true, but Weiner makes you think that every stapler or whisky decanter in the offices were placed at such and such an angle with definitive purpose. It really can make a show… when the setting and style is its own character, it makes the audience feel as if it is a part of it – part of the bigger picture.
