Warner Bros, The LEGO Movie, was such a huge hit that the studio moved forward with spinoff films and a sequel. Since the film’s release, three spinoff films have been announced; the first will focus on Batman’s character; the second will center on Ninjago; the third and most recently announced one will be written by Jason Segel and Drew Pearce. Rob Schrab of Community will direct The LEGO Movie sequel. These spinoffs and its sequel will now see a shift in schedules, which is nothing entirely new as most will stay within their respective release years.
According to Deadline, the untitled LEGO Batman Movie was expected to be released May 2017, but now will get a February 10, 2017 date. It is a familiar date because that’s the same weekend the first LEGO Movie was released. Ninjago, which was scheduled for a 2016 release, has been bumped back to September 22, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel now has an official release date of May 18, 2018.
The Untitled LEGO Batman Movie will now go up against Fox’s The Mountain Between Us, which stars Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike. Ninjago’s new release has them going head-to-head against an untitled Sony Pictures Animated film. As for The LEGO Movie Sequel, that will be placed in between Avengers: Infinity War Part I (May 4, 2018) and Godzilla 2 (June 8, 2018). These dates are subject to change of course.
Here’s a quote from today’s announcement:
“We are very excited about dating our upcoming LEGO animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warners. “These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come.”
So which spinoffs are you most excited for?
