We’ve heard rumors in the past of a possible Han Solo origins story being the focus of one of the Star Wars spinoff movies, and today those rumors become fact.

It’s being reported that a movie focusing on a young Han Solo is on the way, and it will be directed by the hot directing duo of Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Apart from the movie being about a young Han Solo, other details about the story have yet to be revealed.

This particular Star Wars spinoff movie is not the same one that Chronicle and Fantastic Four reboot director Josh Trank was working on before departing the project back in May of this year.

Lord and Miller are insanely busy these days, so it’s unclear what the time frame for this movie is going to be. Other projects on their plate at the moment include writing The Flash and an animated Spider-Man movie, the next Jump Street movies in the mix, not to mention their hit show The Last Man on Earth as well. But contractual obligations aside, you can bet they’ll be clearing out space to get to it as quickly as humanly possible. This means directing some of the previously mentioned projects won’t be happening anymore, though they will still be involved as either writers or producers or both still.

In a joint statement, Lord and Miller said of the announcement:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

Miller also posted a response to the news being made official on the Twitter:

The young Han Solo spinoff movie will be written by Lawrence Kasdan (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and his son Jon Kasdan (Dawson’s Creek, Freaks and Geeks), and it has been locked in for a May 25, 2018 release date.

As for who might play the young Solo? No word yet on potential stars. Though I’m sure you can expect Chris Pratt to be rumored for the role within the next few days.
