World of Warcraft Legion Expansion

Blizzard Entertainment this morning at Gamescom in Germany officially revealed the next chapter in the World of Warcraft series: World of Warcraft: Legion. The new expansion will expand the level cap once again, this time to 110. Also there will be a new playable class: Demon Hunter.

With the announcement comes a new high res CGI sizzle reel featuring Gul’dan and a brief video explaining a few of the new features. The new class will be a “Hero” class in the vein of the Death Knight class from the games 3rd expansion: Wrath of the Lich King. They will have unique abilities like seeing through walls and a double jump. The sizzle reel shows Gul’dan awakening the most well-known demon hunter in Illidan Stormrage. New demon hunters will be called upon by Illidan to fulfill quests as part of their “awakening”. Death Knights started at level 55 after isolated questing, it would be safe to say we’ll see a similar experience in Legion with Demon Hunters.

Continue below for more and to watch a feature overview of Legion and a cinematic teaser.

The expansion will also feature a new continent called “The Broken Isles.” Dalaran will be returning as the main hub (again, a lot like Wrath of the Lich King). Players will start out however at the fabled “Tomb of Sargeras” from Warcraft lore. It’s pure speculation at this point, but it could be that Sargeras himself (one of the most feared adversaries in the lore) will finally be appearing in World of Warcraft. After all, this wouldn’t be the first (or even the second time) that Blizzard has used the Burning Legion in the storyline. In fact, they were the focus of the game’s first expansion almost a decade ago in the Burning Crusade. These early announcements seem to point to the Legion fully seeking vengeance for past events.

Some other new stuff was teased like players getting to wield versions of legendary weapons called “artifact weapons.” Players will use a model of well-known weapons like Thrall’s “Doomhammer” and get to customize it a little to their tastes. The teaser showed a player customizing an “Ashbringer” with flames and purple coloring. Also, a brief glimpse of “Class Order Halls” which seems to suggest a special meeting place depending on your certain class. Less “intermingling” with other classes one supposes. Warriors hanging with warriors kind of thing. Finally, there will also be a revamping of the Honor system for the PvP side of things. Blizzard’s official summarization:

The Burning Legion has returned, and the heroes of Azeroth are being called to the Broken Isles to continue their adventures. Attempting to drive the Legion back will take players to level 110, have them wielding powerful Artifact Weapons, progressing through a new PvP Honor system, gathering with their brothers and sisters in Class Orders, and even choosing a new character class altogether: the Demon Hunter.

No official word of a release date or even when the new expansion might hit the testing phase. With the previous expansion, the game was announced in November 2013 and was released a year later in November 2014. With subscriptions already waning with Warlords of Draenor, it remains to be seen if there will be pressure for Blizzard to release Legion in a faster manner.

Are you ready for another go against Sargeras and the Legion?
