Beware of some spoilers from last night’s episode of Ash vs Evil Dead!
We are back at the cabin in this week’s Ash vs Evil Dead. Ash (Bruce Campbell) brought the Necronomicon back to the place where it all began, and according to his Brujo vision, he has to bury it there. Last week we lost Amanda Fisher. Ash was off in the work shed and Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) fell victim to an Ash clone created from the original severed Ash hand. It was a particularly brutal death, involving a cleaver to the neck and impalement on deer antlers. It was a bloodbath and a reminder that even with Campbell spouting hilarious one-liners, that this is a horror series, based on one of the all-time great horror films. Kelly and Pablo arrive just as good Ash is fighting bad Ash, and have to figure out which Ash is which… of course both are little racist and totally inappropriate.
More below.
After solving the Ash issue, it’s time for some good old bodily dismemberment. Right in the middle of that, the hikers from last week return seeking refuge from the woods. The blonde is still into Pablo (Ray Santiago). “She’s super cute… don’t know much else about her.” Ash’s response: “That’s all you have to know.” While Ash needs time to put his chainsaw to good use, Kelly and Pablo take the hikers for a walk. Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) covers her jealously by proclaiming that she’s “not good enough” for him… aw!
Ash tries to give Amanda a heart-felt goodbye; “I promise I’ll be a gentleman and respect your modesty, while I cut you into small pieces.” Unfortunately her body is not there, and Deadite Fisher attacks the hikers, making human puppets out of two. She moves in for the kill, but out of nowhere Ruby (Lucy Lawless) shows up kung-fu style. Lawless and Campbell get into a hilarious back in forth, and Ash is simply not used to someone being able to mouth off equal to him. After she mocks his equipment, he’s reduced to the elementary school trash talk… “eat my butt!”
They get back to the cabin where Ruby advises they cut the face off the book… and yeah, it’s more disgusting than it sounds. Ruby starts reading from the book… and let’s just say things are about to get real as we head into next week’s season finale. Ash vs. Evil Dead has literally taken its characters back to the scenes of the first films, and these last two episodes have felt like pure continuations from those films. I love it. The Raimis have upped the gore and bloodshed, and there was a legitimately cool surprise at the end. Plus, I can watch Campbell and Lawless throw one-liners at each other all day.
Season 1 of Ash vs. Evil Dead ends next Saturday night, January 2nd at 9:00pm ET on Starz.
