It was a year ago this month that Marvel revealed that they had officially cast Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role of their Doctor Strange film. Ever since, fans have been eagerly awaiting the first look of the Sherlock star as the Sorcerer Supreme, especially after the film’s director, Scott Derrickson, posted some fan art of the actor in the role.
And now, the first look we’ve been waiting for is finally here!
Check out Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in the image gallery here below.
The image comes from a cover photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly magazine, and is not actually a still from the film, which only began shooting last month, and is expected to finish up in March 2016. The photo shows the British actor in costume as Doctor Stephen Strange making one of the character’s signature spell-casting hand gestures.
Here’s what Cumberbatch told EW about working on his character’s spell-casting gestures:
“I’m still in the infancy of learning all that,” Cumberbatch tells EW. “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”
Along with Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who becomes the powerful Doctor Strange after he’s injured in a car accident, Tilda Swinton stars as the Ancient One, Strange’s mentor; Chiwetel Ejiofor is Karl Mordo, a former student of Strange; and Michael Stuhlbarg is Nicodemus West, a rival scientist. The roles of Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen have not been disclosed yet, but EW plans to reveal this information in their newest issue. The roles of Amy Landecker and Scott Adkins are also still unknown.
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, and Michael Stuhlbarg, Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
