Sam Raimi To Direct New Horror Film Described As “Misery Meets Cast Away”

Sam Raimi Last of Us panel NYCC 2014

Horror has always been Sam Raimi‘s bread and butter, but the Evil Dead filmmaker has stayed away from the director’s chair in recent years to produce a handful of titles. Now it looks like he will be getting back behind the camera for a new horror project that has been described as “Misery meets Cast Away.” More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news. While they couldn’t provide any plot details about Raimi’s upcoming film, they did say that it would be set on an island, and described it as “Misery meets Cast Away.” Both films featured limited characters stuck in some sort of isolation. In Misery, an author (James Caan) was being held against his will by a crazed fan. In Cast Away, Tom Hanks found himself struggling to survive on an island, alone, and with only a volleyball to talk to. So maybe the crazed fan will break the volleyball’s imaginary legs? Joking aside, this does seem like a very interesting premise that will see a few characters isolated in a very limited space.

Now this is Raimi’s first theatrical project in a very long time. He hasn’t directed a film since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and his last horror film was 2009’s Drag Me to Hell. The filmmaker has produced a number of films in the past few years, his most recent being the fun B-rated alligator terror Crawl with his next to be a reboot of The Grudge. While he is known for his horror projects, Raimi is best known in for his Spider-Man film trilogy (2002-2007).

The report also adds that Raimi will reteam with Columbia Pictures, the studio that distributed his Spider-Man trilogy, for the untitled horror flick. He will be using a script written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon. The pair wrote the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot. They will also be writing a new take on A Christmas Carol for The Russo Brothers’ AGBO Films and The Good, the Evil & the Undead for Legendary.

“I am thrilled to be reunited with Columbia Pictures and re-teaming with Sanford (Panitch, Sony’s motion pictures group president) and Ange (Giannetti),” said Raimi in a statement. “I have been a fan of Shannon and Swift and we have found the perfect adventure to share with the world.”

No word yet on when the untitled project could hit theaters, but we will keep you up to date on any new developments when they come in.
