Here at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, North Hall is full of big concepts. Samsung uses the space to show off their latest VR Gear devices while Ford’s massive display allows visitors to sit in a virtual vehicle as if it were a cockpit. But the area isn’t full of hardware manufacturers alone.
Syfy, long a purveyor of the types of fantasy and space opera dramas that imagine the very types of technologies that we often see here at CES, has their own little booth. Promoting their latest space fantasy, the The Expanse, the Syfy Labs booth uses the latest technology to show how viewers can interact with their devices. The Expanse booth includes a VR station where passers-by can stop and experience some of the space scenes in virtual reality.

Walking around the booth reveals Syfy’s MakerBot 3D Printing Studio. There Syfy Labs reveals downloadable models for well-heeled fans to print in their MakerBot 3D printing devices. The models represent the ships, figurines of the characters, and props from the show.
Finally, the Syfy Labs Expanse exhibit lays out a mini home theater, complete with IOT light darling Philips. Back in July of 2015, the cable network and inventive lighting company teamed up to deliver a never-before-seen immersive experience that ties the smart/connected lighting in the home to the content on the television. Using their app, the lighting will attempt to effect the mood of the home theater. The set-up requires a lot of devices and significant investment, but for those interested in fully immersing themselves in the content they watch on sci-fi, there’s nothing more robust.
Take a look at the images and video below to get a better idea of how Syfy’s partnerships with MakerBot, Philips, and VR platforms were displayed, and you can learn much more about Syfy Labs over at Syfy.
