At the start of the year, it was reported that Daredevil season one showrunner and Starz’s Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight would be directing Pacific Rim 2. The first movie, which was released in 2013, was directed by Guillermo del Toro.
Now comes word that the movie has found its star. It’s been announced that John Boyega, who was most recently seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has been locked in for the lead role in the sequel. And who is he playing? The son of Idris Elba‘s fan-favorite character.
Of the news, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production Mary Parent said:
“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”
Del Toro, who will still be a producer on Pacific Rim 2, had this to say about the casting:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. “˜The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Boyega will also be producing the movie with Femi Oguns through their Upper Room Productions. Along with del Toro and Parent, Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will also produce. The movie will be executive produced by Cale Boyter.
No word on what role, if any, stars of the original like Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi will play in the sequel if Boyega is playing the lead.
