‘Jurassic World 2’ Said To Be “More Suspenseful and Scary”

Chris Pratt in Jurassic World

Sequels always up the ante in terms of story and visuals. So after the success of Jurassic World, it is safe to say that will happen tenfold in the sequel. While the rumor that the production budget for Jurassic World 2 ballooned up to $260 million was nothing more than hearsay, the film is expected to begin filming early next year. Although Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow won’t be there for the sequel, he will still be very much involved in guiding The Orphanage and The Impossible filmmaker J.A. Bayona as he takes his place directing the fifth installment of Universal’s Jurassic franchise. Now, Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly is dropping a few hints about what to expect in the sequel. Check out the story below.

In an interview with InGeneral Podcast on Jurassic Outpost, Connolly described the new film as “suspenseful” and “scary,” which is right up Bayona’s wheelhouse given his filmography. Here’s the full quote:

“It will be more suspenseful and scary. It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”

The writer then spoke about the collaborative effort between Bayona and Trevorrow. We’ve known that Trevorrow would still be involved in the creative process for the next two films, and according to Connolly, he’s been working with Bayona and working on the script “every day since July.”

“Film has become so cutthroat and competitive; it felt like an opportunity to create a situation where two directors could really collaborate. It’s rare these days, but it’s something that the directors that we admire used to do all the time””one writes and produces and the other directs, and the end result is something that’s unique to both of them.”

Moving onto the visuals, a common criticism of Jurassic World was that it relied too heavily on the CGI, despite early social media postings revealing that they would have practical effects. Now they’ve learned their lesson and will be implementing the use of animatronics. Here’s what Connolly said:

“There will be animatronics for sure. We’ll follow the same general rule as all of the films in the franchise which is the animatronic dinosaurs are best used when standing still or moving at the hips or the neck. They can’t run or perform complex physical actions, and anything beyond that you go to animation. The same rules applied in Jurassic Park.”

Now that Jurassic World is confirmed to be a trilogy, one would think that the second film would follow up on the idea that dinosaurs could be used in military warfare. Before Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) died, he sought to use the raptors and the Indominus rex as military weapons with the help of Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong). Now it’s not very clear where the sequel could go, but it looks like Connolly won’t be exploring the dinosaurs as military weapons narrative any longer:

“I’m not that interested in militarized dinosaurs, at least not in practice. I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning. Derek and I, one of our first reactions was “˜No if anyone’s gonna militarize raptors that’s what the bad guy does, he’s insane.'”

This is our first real bit of the plot since these sequels were announced. Last year, Trevorrow said Jurassic World 2 would not be “just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island” and could explore the idea that the 15 other entities around the world who had the technology to bring dinosaurs to life. While it’s still not clear if that’s what the film will be about, at least we know it will be more “scary” and “suspenseful.”
