When we last saw The Last Man on Earth, the group was living in a business office complex, that wasn’t all it seemed at first. They locked Melissa (January Jones) up because she was insane. Gail (Mary Steenburgen) was mad at Carol (and the rest) and left, but got stuck in the elevator. Phil took Carol (Will Forte, Kristen Schaal) on a honeymoon. So no one looked for Gail. They thought she was blowing off steam, but she was trapped. She tried shooting her gun off as a signal, attaching a note to a Roomba (which ate it), and it seemed as if she killed herself at the end.
Spoilers below.
The Last Man On Earth 3.10 “Got Milk?” review: It opens with people! There’s a party for the Pamela Brinton Foundation, and Pamela Brinton is none other than the hysterical Kristen Wiig, who is bombing in her speech, especially with her nemesis Katherine (Laura Dern) heckling her. Someone collapses and is carried off. The next morning, she asks “Alana” (like Amazon’s “Alexa”) for the headlines. One is about the virus and one is about President Pence!. She tells her husband that Katherine bought a bunker, and thinks it’s a total overreaction to a “bad flu season.”
Is it, though? Next, she watches a bunch of funerals on TV of 46th President Pence, and subsequent presidents Ryan, Tillerson, Menuchen, Sessions, and DeVos. Whoa… And her husband gets sick. She has to leave him, so she goes to Katherine’s house. Since Katherine is dead, she takes the key to the bunker and lives there with Jeremy, her dog. The years pass. Year 1 looks like fun, almost an 80s montage. Year 2 is more depressing, and year 3 she quits sanity and sobriety. Her dog just won’t say “milk.” She is perpetually drunk and eats cat food. She accidentally lets her dog run away, and all seems lost. Then one day, her drone finds our little community. Remember? When they thought Gail was hallucinating? But after Todd and Erica saw it too, they were all cheering…until Melissa killed it. Determined… Pamela leaves the bunker to find them.
This episode, although off the beaten path, gives us a really interesting perspective on the first days of the virus with the darkest of comedy mixed in. I really enjoyed the flashes of presidential funerals, not because I want anything physically bad to happen to any of them, but because I felt it was a metaphorical foreshadowing of the fall of this administration. Wiig is just so funny at being awkward and unfunny. I cannot wait until she hooks up with the group.
