Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is regarded as one of the best Spider-Man films out there. Rather than recycle the same old story, the film had a refreshing take on the character by having an animated approach and focusing on Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino teenager who takes the mantle of Spider-Man and proves to audiences that “anyone can wear the mask.”
It was a literal comic book come to life. And following its commercial and critical success Sony would go on to greenlight a sequel. And now the tentatively titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 has been given a release date.
It all started with a couple of teasing tweets from the Spider-Verse Twitter account. Not much was said, but clearly something was up:
It would be easy just to see these tweets as something fun. However, another tweet indicated that “something’s up”:
That’s when the Sony Pictures Animation twitter account tweeted the official release date:
This is pretty exciting news for fans of the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film was a huge hit with audiences and critics, some of whom regarded the animated film as the best overall film of 2018. It was the best animated film of 2018, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
So it will be interesting to see if new director Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s Voltron) can carry on that momentum that was created by original directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who produced the original with the former co-writing the script with Ramsey, will return to produce. They will be joined by Amy Pascal, who will also produce. Wonder Woman 1984 screenwriter David Callaham will pen the screenplay.
It remains to be seen what the sequel will be about. However, the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended with Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman, opening a portal to Miles’ dimension, which may lead us to believe that he will be visiting her dimension. Of course, that is pure speculation. But the seeds of romance are there, so of course, that relationship will be explored.
Now we just have to wait to see what will happen to the other gestating projects. We know that Sony is planning an all-female spinoff set in the Spider-Verse. Lauren Montgomery is in talks to direct. She’s directed DC animated films like Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. We will keep you up to date on that project should any new developments come up. We’ve also heard about an animated TV series set in that universe.
But, at least for now, we have a new release date for the tentatively titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, which is now scheduled to hit theaters on April 8, 2022. If all stick to this date, it will go up against currently untitled Universal and WB event films and an untitled DreamWorks Animation film a week later.
