Godzilla 2 Cast & Story Details

The sequel to director Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot has started shooting, and the full cast and some story details have been confirmed. The movie was previously said to be titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but that title isn’t mentioned in the press release, so we’re back to just Godzilla 2 for the time being.

The movie is part of what Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures’ are calling their “MonsterVerse” shared universe. It began with the ’14 Godzilla, and was continued with this year’s Kong: Skull Island. Eventually it will lead to a clash of titans in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is set to be helmed by Blair Witch and The Guest director Adam Wingard.

Continue reading for a story description and the full cast.

From the press release:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species””thought to be mere myths””rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Starring in Godzilla 2 is returning stars Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins, Inception) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, Layer Cake, Happy-Go-Lucky), and newcomers to the MonsterVerse Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed, The Conjuring), Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street, Manchester by the Sea), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The West Wing), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley, The Campaign), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Imitation Game), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness); and Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Interestingly enough, though technically a newcomer to the MonsterVerse, Middleditch did have a role in Kong: Skull Island. The actor is good friends with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, also appearing in his indie title The Kings of Summer. Talking to ET Online, Vogt-Roberts revealed that he was trying to get him a role in Skull Island but couldn’t because of a scheduling conflict with Silicon Valley. Instead of giving up, he snuck his friend into the movie as the voice of a character named Jerry who speaks to Brie Larson’s character on the phone.

Godzilla 2 is being directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus), who also penned the screenplay along with Zach Shields (Krampus).

Filming will mostly take place in Atlanta, Georgia, and the movie is currently planned for a March 2019 release.
