Warner Bros. is making yet another big push for their dreamy Steven Spielberg film, Ready Player One. Based on the Ernest Cline novel of the same name, the film centers on Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) who has found the Easter eggs hidden by the late OASIS creator James Donovan Halliday (Mark Rylance). Whoever is in possession of the Easter egg will inherit Halliday’s assets, fortunes, and control over the Oasis. So as you can imagine, everyone who plays in the escapist world wants to get their hands on it.
Now a new “Dreamer” trailer goes further in depth in the story, while also offering fans another glimpse of the upcoming film. Check it out below.
Honestly, I was worried that this film would be nothing more than a hodgepodge of pop culture nostalgia where Chucky could fight against a Spartan from Halo, or the Iron Giant would be in a fist fight with a Gundam, or the Batmobile would cross the finish line ahead of the Doc Brown’s DeLorean. You know, geek stuff.
However, some early reactions from SXSW say that the film has more depth to it than just Spielberg throwing in pop culture references hoping it would stick. There is an actual story to it. So it should be interesting to see how fans and non-fans react to the film adaptation.
And even if the film does have its flaws, this new trailer gives me hope that I can overlook them. The production design and cinematography alone are things to look forward to.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One also stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Lena Waithe, and Simon Pegg. It opens in theaters on March 29, 2018.
