A lot has happened with the new Suicide Squad film this week.
In addition to the hiring of James Gunn, who will be penning the script with a possible option to direct, original Suicide Squad director David Ayer spoke highly of the hiring, while Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has expressed interest in starring the film. More on these two reports below.
While the first Suicide Squad has seen its fair share of criticism and comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn’s hiring could point to a shift in the way Warner Bros. shapes the future of the DC Extended Universe. While it’s unclear what kind of new take Gunn will have on the film, Ayer had nothing but good things to say about the hiring. Here are just a couple of his tweets:
Changing of the guard happens a lot in these films. But the circumstances that led up to it are anything but normal. Gunn was fired after an alt-right group dug up years-old tasteless joke tweets and weaponized them to get him fired because he disapproved of the Trump administration. Whether or not Gunn deserved it is up for debate, but he has been fired by Disney and hired by WB.
But his firing was deemed unjustified by many, including Bautista, who has said he would break his contract and quit his role as Drax from the Guardians of the Galaxy if Disney did not use Gunn’s script. In fact, he was the most outspoken defenders of Gunn after he was fired. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently on hold as of the moment, but Bautista isn’t wasting any time expressing his interest in being in another one of Gunn’s films:
Whether or not this happens remains to be seen. We have to remember that Gunn has only been hired to write the script. There is the option that he could direct depending on the outcome of the script. But we won’t know how any of that will turn out until WB makes another announcement. That being said, Drax was one of the best parts of Guardians of the Galaxy. While he was a muscular brute, the character still had a heart of gold. There are plenty of villains with a redemptive quality to them that are on the Suicide Squad. Of course, there is a chance that Bautista would want to play a straight-up bad guy.
We will just have to wait and see.
