Spyglass Announces Reboot Of Clive Barker’s ‘Hellraiser’

Doug Bradley As Pinhead In Hellraiser VII: Deader

Spyglass Media Group has announced that they’re fast tracking a reboot of Hellraiser, the 1987 horror classic written and directed by Clive Barker and starring Doug Bradley as Pinhead. The movie was based on Barker’s own novella The Hellbound Heart.

The new take on Barker’s creation is set to be written and produced by David S. Goyer, whose credits include Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the Blade trilogy, and Man of Steel.

The announcement was made by Spyglass chairman and CEO Gary Barber, who had this to say about the project:

“Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of Hellraiser.”

Goyer also released a statement, saying:

“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

Producing alongside Goyer through Phantom Four films is Keith Levine, while Spyglass Vice President of Development and Production Chris Stone is set to oversee the reboot.

What’s not yet clear is if Barker will have anything to do with the reboot as a producer or perhaps as a creative consultant. Almost six years ago now it was announced that Barker himself was going to remake Hellraiser, but obviously that didn’t happen. Barker even said Doug Bradley would be back in the role of Pinhead after not playing the character for the first time in the then nine-movie series. Instead of Barker’s remake a tenth entry in the series titled Hellraiser: Judgment was made and eventually released last year. It was the second time Bradley didn’t play Pinhead.

Speaking of Bradley, it’s also unclear if he will be back or if he’d even be interested in returning. But judging by Goyer’s quote above, it sounds like the plan is to do something a little different with Pinhead and company.
