Well, actually, as the book tells us, the creepy aspect has always been a part of the season, with tales of legendary creatures like Krampus, Wendigo, and the Abominable Snowman. For the traditionally innocuous elements, such as toys, snow globes, and even Rudolph, Shearon converts them into terrifying yet somehow still festive depictions just begging to be colorized.
