Hellraiser

Now that its feature film fortunes have dried with the proposed remake stalling and its latest DTV video being greeted with bombastic derision from longtime fans, it looks like Hellraiser is setting its sights on the world of television.

A new series based on the horror movie franchise that began in 1987 with the classic original written and directed by Clive Barker (and based on his novella “The Hellbound Heart”) is being developed over at Sonar Entertainment, formerly RHI Entertainment, the company started by television miniseries impresario Robert Halmi Sr. Halmi and his son Robert Halmi Jr. are no longer with Sonar.

Halloween is just around the corner and screenwriter Carl Dupre has plans to make it as scary as he can. His latest movie, the Robert Englund-starring Inkubus, hits theaters across the Unites States this month and its writer promises to gross you out, but in a good way.

As well as writing a handful of horror sequels (including Prophecy 3: The Ascent, Hellraiser: Hellseeker, Hellraiser: Hellworld) and being a prolific short story writer, Dupre is also a dab hand at comedy. I have been a fan of Dupre’s writing since he wrote one of my favorite movies, the hilarious KISS-centric Detroit Rock City. In a recent interview with Dupre, the screenwriter gave me some insight as to how he wrote Detroit Rock City, what is was like on set, and getting to meet KISS.

But first things first: horror.

Geeks of Doom: So, Inkubus – how did that come about?

Check Out These Cenobites Designs From The On-Hold ‘Hellraiser’ Remake

The Hellraiser remake that has been gestating for years at Dimension Films has once again hit a roadblock. It was recently revealed that the powers that be at the studio have put the project on hold for the time being and that Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer, the director and writer (respectively) who had produced several different script drafts during their time working on the remake, were no longer on the project.

Gary J. Tunnicliffe, the prolific special effects makeup artist who had worked on nearly every Hellraiser sequel made since 1992’s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth as well as many of Dimension’s direct-to-video genre offerings among others, was given the job of redesigning the series’ iconic monsters the Cenobites at his company Two Hours in the Dark. He also penned the script for the latest DTV Hellraiser sequel Revelations, which recently had a trailer released that drew strongly negative reactions from the horror fan community, and that’s putting it mildly. (You can read about that HERE .) It’s clear that Revelations was put together in a hurry so that Dimension wouldn’t lose the Hellraiser rights before they could get the sequel into theaters. (The Roger Corman-produced Fantastic Four movie from 1994 that was shelved right before its planned theatrical release was created under similar circumstances.)

Hellraiser

Despite a series of sequels that can best be described as trash, Hellraiser is still very much a beloved horror franchise, in desperate need of a new take and a new breath of fresh air.

However, that bit of fresh air just got a little less interesting.

Shock Til You Drop recently spoke to the pair of Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine, Drive Angry), who revealed that they had left their long-discussed remake, which has been in the works for just around a year now.

Remember that trailer for the upcoming low-budget sequel Hellraiser: Revelations, the ninth installment in the totally-run-its-course Hellraiser film franchise?

Well, Hellraiser creator Clive Barker saw the new trailer and took to Twitter to make sure everyone knows that not only does this new offering NOT come from his mind, but that it doesn’t even come from his ass.

Hello,my friends. I want to put on record that the flic out there using the word Hellraiser IS NO FUCKIN’ CHILD OF MINE!

I have NOTHING to do with the fuckin’ thing. If they claim its from the mind of Clive Barker,it’s a lie. It’s not even from my butt-hole.
