The first trailer for Underworld: Awakening, the fourth film in the action-horror franchise that started in 2003, has been released online. You can watch an embedded trailer below this article.
The movie is directed by the team of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, Swedish filmmakers who made their directorial debut on the little-seen 2010 thriller Shelter starring Julianne Moore after working primarily in television in their native country for close to a decade. Len Wiseman, the director of the original Underworld and its 2006 sequel Underworld: Evolution (and currently directing the Total Recall remake), is on board as a producer. The screenplay was written by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, who also has numerous comic book (Amazing Spider-Man) and film (Ninja Assassin, Thor, Changeling) writing credits to his name.
Kate Beckinsale returns to the role of Selene, the fearless werewolf-killing vampire assassin and heroine of the first two Underworld films. She sat out of the 2009 prequel Rise of the Lycans. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, Beckinsale appears to be the only cast member from any of the first three films returning for Awakening, but that could be subject to change.
The plot focuses on Selene as she emerges from a cryogenic nap to face a new world where the battle between the vampires and their mortal enemies, the Lycans, has now been joined by the humans, who hunt them both. Much blue-tinted, slow-motion action with Beckinsale jumping about and firing twin pistols while wearing the tightest of skintight leather outfits ensues, just like in every movie in the Underworld series.
Joining Beckinsale are Charles Dance (Alien 3), Stephen Rea (The Crying Game), Michael Ealy (Californication), Sandrine Holt (Resident Evil: Apocalypse), and India Eisley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager).

Underworld: Awakening will be released in 3D on January 20, 2012.

While no one except them knows
whether or not they have been trying, it is strange that after seven years of
marriage, Kate Beckinsale still hasn’t had any children with Len Wiseman. He
has selflessly helped raise her daughter for all this time and she seems solely
focused on her career.
