Guy Ritchie may be working on Disney’s live-action take on Aladdin, but the filmmaker is already putting his newest project together. He’ll be making a return to British crime dramas in Toff Guys. And the film has just cast some pretty big names. New reports confirm Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Kate Beckinsale (Underworld), and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) are set to star in the film. More on the report here below.
Variety says Toff Guys will be in the same vein as Ritchie’s Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Ritchie will produce, as well as co-write the script with Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson. “The story explores the collision between European “old money” and the modern marijuana industry. It follows a British drug lord attempting to cash out on his highly profitable empire by selling it off to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires.”
Ritchie is no stranger to British crime capers. He’s also directed Sherlock Holmes and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. As previously mentioned, he’s also working on Disney’s new take on the live-action reimagining of their animated classic Aladdin.
Per Variety, Miramax CEO Bill Block said, “McConaughey as the inside outsider with Henry and Kate will make for a thrilling Guy Ritchie ride.” The production and distribution company paid up to $30 million for the pic. Production is set to begin in England this fall.
Golding is having quite a year having starred in the summer blockbuster hit Crazy Rich Asians and Paul Feig’s noir drama A Simple Favor. Currently, McConaughey can be seen in White Boy Rick. He can next be seen in alongside Anne Hathaway in Serenity and Harmony Korine’s Beach Bum. Beckinsale can be seen starring alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in Farming. She recently signed on to appear in El Tonto, Charlie Day’s directorial debut.
Having come off the clearly underseen The Man From U.N.C.L.E. as well as the family-friendly film Aladdin, it will be nice to see Ritchie return to gritty British crime capers. Snatch is one of my favorites films that is full of witty dialogue and hilarious characters. So if Toff Guys is in the same vein as Snatch, then it shouldn’t be too hard to like the film.
Toff Guys is scheduled for a May 24, 2019 theatrical release.
