If you were worried that you’d never get to see any more Hellboy stories following the events of Hellboy: The Fury #3, well, you probably didn’t read the last page promising his return in 2012.
Okay, you probably know that the Hellboy series hasn’t ended, but we’re still not sure what’s going to happen to the character himself after the shocking ending. Perhaps not surprisingly, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is going to mine the character’s rich (fictional) history by telling stories set in his past. The first of these stories will see publication in Dark Horse Presents #7, and will be titled Hellboy vs. The Aztec Mummy. The issue hits shelves in January 2012.
Hellboy vs. The Aztec Mummy will be an 8-page story and is the follow-up to the 2010 one-shot Hellboy in Mexico, written by Mignola with art by comics legend and frequent Hellboy collaborator Richard Corben. Hellboy vs. The Aztec Mummy features Hellboy fighting a Mexican bat-god, a luchadore, and as the title explains, an Aztec Mummy.
As Mignola explains, “Back in 1956 Hellboy spent several months stumbling drunkenly through Mexico and this is just one of the odd things that may or may not have happened to him during that time. He claims to have no memory of this particular incident but that doesn’t mean it’s not true”
So, if you were worried that you would never see the Right Hand of Doom in action again, fear not. I’m sure this is just the first of many new stories that will keep the legend of Hellboy alive for years.
