This is exactly what happens when your movie happens to have a record-breaking weekend opening of $207.1 million ($700 million worldwide if you are keeping count). Yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Marvel Studios is already developing The Avengers 2. Deadline was the first to break the news.
While The Avengers getting a sequel and the core cast returning to reprise their respective roles is unquestionable, we don’t know if Joss Whedon is returning to write and direct the film. Still that isn’t stopping Iger from singing praises for the film, as according to him The Avengers‘ success “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.”
The thing is we probably won’t be seeing any of the actors suiting up to fight against Thanos any time soon given that Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2, and another Marvel Mystery Movie (which is rumored to be Ant-Man) are all expected to hit theaters within the next two years.
But the biggest question is, who will be directing the sequel to The Avengers? Whedon isn’t officially signed on to direct the sequel, but there is an option on the table for him to return to sit in the director’s chair once more. It’s important – no, it’s vital that Whedon returns to write and direct the sequel because he was the difference that made the film spectacular as opposed to just another generic summer flick. The Avengers was filled was excitement, great character development, and plenty of humor, so it is very important that he is a part of developing The Avengers 2.
