Ugli Studios Presents #1 is an anthology comic that features two VERY different stories, both by the same creative team. I have to admit, I’m not familiar with any of these creators, but hey, I was willing to give them the old college try.
Writers Jason Lenox and David Paul crank out two different stories. One is interesting, the other, I’m afraid, isn’t that great. The first story is an entertaining Army of Darkness style tale with a unique twist. It’s enjoyable enough, but suffers from a lack of proper explanation. It’s got some good action, but there are times that you’ll have no clue who’s who and what’s going on. The second story, is disappointing. It’s a Twilight Zone kind of tale, except that you’ll probably see the ending coming about a mile away, as I did. It’s a sci-fi adventure but strangely, there’s very little sci-fi elements to it.
Jason Lenox pulls double duty as artist for both stories. What surprises me is that his art is pretty good in the first story, but the second story is noticeably not as good. His strength obviously lies in drawing fantasy material, not sci-fi renderings of tech and otherworldly scenery.
I wish I could recommend Ugli Studios Presents #1, but I honestly can’t. They get an A for effort, but a C- for execution.
Here’s hoping that they work the kinks out and that Presents #2 shows improvement.
